| Subject: Indians' Josh Barfield and Victor Martinez to DL Thu Jun 12, 2008 3:49 pm | |
| | Quote: | CLEVELAND -- The Indians got the news on catcher Victor Martinez and second baseman Josh Barfield on Thursday, and it was bad news on both fronts. Martinez (right elbow inflammation) and Barfield (left middle finger sprain) are both headed to the 15-day disabled list, and the Indians have purchased the contracts of catcher Yamid Haad and infielder Jorge Velandia from Triple-A Buffalo. The club had not yet announced corresponding roster moves to get Haad and Velandia on the 40-man.
Martinez left Wednesday night's game against the Twins after grounding out in the first inning. After the game, manager Eric Wedge revealed that the elbow had flared up on Martinez during the at-bat and that the catcher has been battling the elbow problem all season.
It had already been known that Martinez, who is batting just .278 with no homers and 21 RBIs this season, was hampered all year by a left hamstring strain suffered Opening Day. The Indians opted not to place him on the disabled list with that injury because they felt he was still valuable to the club, even at less than 100 percent.
Head athletic trainer Lonnie Soloff was expected to talk to reporters before Thursday's game to discuss further details about Martinez's injury and whether Martinez would have to have surgery performed on the elbow.
Kelly Shoppach will handle the starting catching duties in Martinez's absence. Haad, who has hit .159 with three doubles and three RBIs in 25 games for the Bisons, will be the backup. Haad has appeared in 18 Major League games for the Giants and Pirates, with his last appearance coming in 2005.
Barfield, meanwhile, is headed to the DL just three days after he was promoted from Buffalo to take over the starting second base job from the struggling Asdrubal Cabrera.
Barfield left Tuesday's game after a fourth-inning at-bat in which he sprained the finger while checking his swing. He was 0-for-6 in his first two games with the Tribe.
Cabrera isn't eligible to be called back up until June 19, so the Indians were forced to turn to the 33-year-old Velandia, who was batting .235 in 16 games for the Bisons. He spent the first part of the season at Triple-A Syracuse in the Blue Jays' organization. Velandia has played in 166 big-league games with the Padres, A's, Mets, Rays and Jays, compiling a career average of .182.
Jamey Carroll will take over the starting second base duties, with Velandia serving in the utility role. |

| This sucks! Victor out for 6-8 weeks and we just brought Barfield up to show us that he can play and he hurts his finger. Cabrera is in AAA. But last night theses guys hit like crazy. Benny is going to be batting 3rd and Peralta will probably bat clean up. Hopefully when Pronk returs he will return to his old form. _________________
